“So, it’s true,” she thought “it’s really true.”
She stared at the Golden Harp for a long time deep in thought before turning and diving underwater. The water cradled her as she kicked with her feet and struck out with her hands. Her name was Coral; she had leafy green eyes and silver hair. She was tall, slim and streamlined. Like all her people, she could see and breathe under water. She was a water nymph, daughter of Leo, King of water beings.
“Two guesses on who wants to see you,” a woman said as soon as Coral neared the palace.
“Rockman,” Coral said, sighing wearily. The woman nodded and waved Coral in. Rockman was the Prime Minister and seemed to feel that it was his duty to punish Coral. Coral swam slowly, dragging her arms so as to delay the inevitable lecture.
“There you are!” Rockman screeched, as soon as she entered his rooms. “I heard you were on the surface again.” His shrill voice hurt Coral’s ears and she gritted her teeth. “Why, when my great-great-grandmother went to the surface…” Coral sighed and looked him over. He was the same height as Coral, with a few wisps of sand colored hair. His eyes were like the deep dark pits where her father sent murderers and arsonists, only colder and blacker.
“Ok, you may go now,” Rockman said finally, after what seemed like an hour of lecturing. Coral walked out of the room, her mind going back to the Harp. There was only one Harp with the designs, a series of designs that could not be repeated with out the maker being killed. Suddenly she stopped short, that was it… The Harp of King Griffen! She swam to the library and went to the librarian who was a clown fish.
“Your Highness!” The clownfish squeaked, his fins flapping at his sides as he bowed.
“Can you show me where the books on King Griffen’s Harp are?” asked Coral. The clown fish rummaged around in his desk until he said, “Aha!”
“What is it?” Coral asked, leaning over the desk, careful not to get stung by the sea anemone chair.
“If you go to the ‘C’ section under Calman there will be a book called The Magnificent Harp of King Griffen.” In his excitement the clownfish bumped into Coral sending her flying into the nearest book shelf. “Sorry,” the clownfish mumbled.
“Its ok,” said Coral picking herself up and laughing. She swam over to the ‘C’ section and soon located Calman. The book was thick with glossy kelp pages and designs in the finest octopus ink. Sitting down, Coral began to read.
“The Harp of King Griffen is a wondrous artifact,” the book began, “It has the power to ensnare any living thing.”
“So far, so good,” thought Coral as she read.
“If played by a direct descendant of King Griffen it can be used to turn back any curse.” Coral almost dropped the book in astonishment, as she re-read the words.
“Turn back any curse?” She wondered, “If I can find King Griffen’s descendant then I can get him or her to turn back The Curse.” The Curse was placed on her people by an angry king of the wood nymphs, centuries before. The Curse was remembered with remorse by all water nymphs. “Once too many times, have your people come on land. So I decree, you and your people, from this day forth shall die if you walk on land.” The king of the water nymphs of long ago had not believed the curse so he had tried to go on land and died; too this day, people still wanted to go on land, but did not want to die. Coral had often wanted to lift The Curse, and go on land but had not known how.
She raced out of the library and swam to her father. “Papa! I found King Griffen’s Harp!” Coral shouted as she burst into the throne hall. Her father sat in the center of the hall, on a raised dais. “You found The Harp? How?” asked King Leo.
“Yes, I found a vein of water to a pool in a forest clearing. I stuck my head out of the water and saw it on the bank. May I find the descendant to King Griffen?” Coral asked holding her breath.
“No,” the king said coldly.
“What?” Coral asked doing a double-take.
“No, I will not allow my only daughter and heir to the throne, to go chasing after this mythical person. We are perfectly happy down here.”
Coral stared at her father.
“I disagree, Majesty.” It was Rockman with his shrill voice. “If you have been amongst your subjects, you would know the truth.”
The king shook his head. “I won’t allow it,” he said firmly, turning to look at Coral. She was gone, leaving the water boiling with her anger. She swam to the head magician’s quarters.
The head magician, a red-banded sea star, looked up as she burst in.
“You want me to find King Griffen’s descendant?” he asked incredulously. “Just who do you think you are?”
Coral just looked at him. He sighed, “You are King Griffen’s descendant. But do you really think your father would approve of you playing the Harp?”
Shaking her head, Coral said impishly, “He only said he didn’t want me to find the descendant.” She turned, and then raced out of the palace, back to the clearing where she found the Harp. Reaching out, she touched the Harp. Inside her was a song waiting and as she played, she felt her feet walking out of the water. She had done what she wanted to do; now her people could walk on land. She laughed and dove back in the water to spread the good news. She called out as she swam, “You can go on land!” People disappeared and came back murmuring, “So it’s true, it’s really true.”
